Digital planner app
vs. PDF planner.
Both can give you a place to write with Apple Pencil. The difference is what happens around the page.
Download on theApp StoreThe short answer
A PDF planner is a document you write on in an annotation app. Digital Planner for iPad is a dedicated planning app with handwriting, calendar integrations, and Apple Reminders.
If you mainly want a particular page design and enjoy managing your own files, a PDF can be a good fit. If you want calendar and reminder features alongside your written plans, a planner app brings more of that workflow together.
Compare the everyday experience
| What matters | Digital Planner app | Typical PDF workflow |
|---|---|---|
| Getting started | Download the app and use its planning features. | Choose a PDF, download it, and import it into a compatible annotation app. |
| Handwriting | Write and draw with Apple Pencil inside the planner app. | Write on the PDF using the tools of your annotation app. |
| Calendar connection | Dedicated Apple Calendar, Google Calendar, and Microsoft Outlook integrations. | A PDF itself has no live calendar integration; any connection depends on separate tools. |
| Tasks and reminders | Apple Reminders integration is part of the app’s feature set. | Written to-dos stay on the page unless another tool provides reminder functionality. |
| When plans change | Use connected calendar features alongside your handwritten plan. | You may need to erase, rewrite, or copy appointments you added by hand. |
| Personal style | Personalize plans with handwriting, text, images, and stickers. | Choose from PDF designs and use the annotation tools your app provides. |
| Sync | Digital Planner supports iCloud synchronization. | Sync depends on the annotation app and where you store the file. |
| Cost | Check the App Store for current in-app purchase options. | Costs vary by PDF template and annotation app; free and paid options exist. |
PDF workflows vary. This comparison describes the PDF document itself and common annotation workflows, rather than any particular brand or app.
Where a PDF workflow can add extra steps
Keeping written appointments up to date
If you copy a calendar appointment onto a PDF page, a later change to the original event does not automatically change that handwriting. You need a routine for checking and updating the written plan.
Turning a written task into a reminder
A checkbox drawn on a PDF page is useful visually. For an alert, you generally need a reminder or calendar tool as well. That means deciding where the task lives and keeping the tools in agreement.
Managing the document
Downloading templates, importing files, and organizing copies can be part of a PDF workflow. Some people enjoy that control. Others prefer opening a dedicated app and getting straight to planning.
Choose the workflow you will actually use
Choose a PDF planner if the page design and a familiar annotation app are your priorities. Choose Digital Planner if you want handwritten planning alongside connected calendars, Apple Reminders, and built-in planning views.
You can still work with documents: Digital Planner supports PDF import and annotation. Using a planner app does not mean every existing PDF has to be left behind.
Is Digital Planner for iPad a PDF file?
No. It is a standalone app with its own planning and handwriting tools, calendar integrations, and Apple Reminders support.
Are PDF planners bad?
No. A PDF planner can work well for people who prefer a particular page layout or annotation workflow. A dedicated planner app is another option when calendar and reminder integrations matter to you.
Can I import a PDF into Digital Planner?
Yes. Digital Planner supports PDF import and annotation, in addition to its own planning features.
